REPORT OF THE JUBILEE PERMANENT MEMORIAL SUB-COMMITTEE

In accordance with the resolutions passed at a meeting of the Committee appointed by His Excellency the Governor to make arrangements for the celebration of the completion of the 60th year of the Reign of Her Majesty the Queen, the Sub-Committee have considered the proposals for a permanent memorial referred to them for consideration and now beg to submit their report.

They held three meetings, at which representatives of the press were present.

Mrs. BELL-IRVING and the following gentlemen, Messrs. LEIGH, STEWART, Dr. THOMSON, Messrs. MAY, DENSLOW, DANBY, Drs. JORDAN and ATKINSON were good enough to attend and to give the Committee the benefit of their views. Dr. HARTIGAN was also invited to attend, but stated his inability to do so.

Oil Painting of Her Majesty the Queen.

Mr. COXON, the originator of this proposal, has informed the Sub-Committee that he has written home to enquire whether an Oil Painting of Her Majesty has been executed recently and, if so, whether a copy could be made and at what cost, and that he will lay the information before the Committee when it has been obtained.

Completion of the Statue of Her Majesty the Queen.

Mr. LEIGH has furnished the Sub-Committee with the following estimate of the cost of gilding the Statue; placing bronze lions at the four corners and a railing round the base of the Statue on the upper steps:

Gilding the Statue, Dock Company's estimate $150, say $500 Railing, including gate, delivered in Hongkong, fixed complete, say 2,000 Four bronze lions, delivered in Hongkong and fixed complete, say 5,000 Total $7,500

Mr. DANBY, when asked by the Sub-Committee regarding the completion of the Statue, stated that he thought the gilding of the Statue would be a decided improvement, but that he was not in favour of a railing or bronze lions, suggesting instead of the latter bronze lamps or vases, and that if a railing were to be placed round the Statue, he considered it should be on the bottom step, as one on the uppermost step would dwarf the Statue.

Jubilee Road.

This project was suggested to the Committee by Mr. GERSHON STEWART in a letter dated 31st March, 1897, and consists of

(a.) The construction of a carriage road from Kennedy Town, contouring the Western and Southern slopes of Mount Davis, passing across Sandy Bay and from thence along the Southern shore of the Island, connecting with the existing Aberdeen Road about one mile West of the Village of Aberdeen.
